Celebrex belongs to a class of drugs known as NSAIDs. This means it works by stopping your body from producing a substance called COX-2. Celebrex does not prevent ulcers and is not designed for the prevention of heart attacks or strokes. Celebrex is not designed to treat arthritis. It works by inhibiting the production of certain enzymes that cause inflammation in the body.

Uses of Celebrex

Celebrex is used to treat:

  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Non-rheumatoid arthritis
  • Musculoskeletal pain
  • Ankylosing spondylitis
  • Dementia
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Back pain
  • Ankylosing spondylitis pain
  • Ankylosing spondylitis disease
  • Ankylosing spondylitis and other arthritis pain

How Celebrex Works

Celebrex works by blocking the production of COX-2 in your body. This allows your stomach to block the production of other substances that cause inflammation. COX-2 also increases the risk of bleeding, so it’s important to take it when you’re taking painkillers.

Celebrex also works to reduce the risk of ulcers caused by the use of certain NSAIDs. For example, in cases where you take a NSAID like ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), you’re at a higher risk of experiencing stomach bleeding.
